Premature ejaculation

Premature ejaculation, also known as early ejaculation, is a male problem which can often be underestimated. When an ejaculation occurs faster than the man or his partner wishes, that situation is termed premature ejaculation. And despite the fact that it is a frequent problem for men, it still remains an unfamiliar subject surrounded by much taboo. Though some techniques to prevent premature ejaculation can be learned, they are not always easy to apply. And in addition, there are some medications which can perhaps offer help.

    What is premature ejaculation?

There is early ejaculation if an ejaculation occurs faster than the man or his partner wishes. With men who suffer from premature ejaculations, an ejaculation usually follows before or shortly after penetration.

When an orgasm is reached too quickly, for example after prolonged sexual abstinence, this is termed hypertonic ejaculatio praecox. But if the ejaculation takes place even before an orgasm is reached, this is termed hypotonic ejaculatio praecox. Here, the ejaculation is usually weaker and the perception of orgasm is thus reduced.

    What are the symptoms?

The most prominent symptoms of premature ejaculation are a shorter ejaculation latency, the inability to delay an ejaculation, or an inability to control the timing of an ejaculation.

Stress and relational problems with a sexual partner can also be a contributory factor in premature ejaculation.

    What are the possible causes?

The cause of premature ejaculation is not easy to indicate. Premature ejaculation is most likely an interaction of various factors, and psychological and physical processes in particular.

Experts do not yet know the exact cause of premature ejaculation, but it could be linked to low levels of serotonin, a substance which regulates ejaculation, within the brain.

There may also be some unusual hypersensitivity of the male genitalia, so that a small amount of stimulation is enough to achieve an ejaculation.

    How is a diagnosis determined?

The diagnosis is largely based on the patient's complaints. If the doctor suspects there may be a biological or organic problem, then a physical examination can be performed.
