Avodart is an antiandrogen which reduces the effect of the male hormone testosterone. Its active ingredient is dutasteride.
Doctors prescribe it for men who have an enlarged prostate and thus have trouble urinating. Dutasteride helps to shrink the prostate, therefore making urination easier.
Avodart combats an enlarged prostate – the prostate is a gland surrounding the urethra, near the bladder. When it becomes enlarged, urine flow and thus urination becomes more difficult.
The active ingredient dutasteride reduces production of dihydrotestosterone (DHT), the hormone responsible for the growth of the prostate. So taking dutasteride can shrink the prostate, allowing urine to flow more easily through the urethra. It usually takes 3 to 6 months before there is any noticeable effect.
Avodart is taken once a day in tablet form. It is advisable to do this at a fixed time, to avoid forgetting a dose.
Avodart is usually taken for several months, because it takes some time before the effects become noticeable.
Avodart can only be obtained on prescription from a doctor. Avodart is a brand name, but the product is also available unbranded as dutasteride. In combination with another active ingredient, it is also available under the brand name combodart.
