Malarone

Malarone is a medication used to prevent and treat malaria. The active ingredients in Malarone are proguanil and atovaquone, which kill malaria parasites found in the blood or in the liver. When visiting high-risk zones, this medication can be taken as a preventative measure. For malarial infections, a Malarone treatment course usually lasts three days.

What is Malarone and what is it used for?

Malarone is a medication with the active ingredients proguanil and atovaquone. It is used to prevent or treat malaria parasite infections.

Malarone is available in tablet form and should be taken orally. These tablets can also be taken as a preventative measure to avoid the risk of infection when visiting malaria zones. It can also be used to treat malarial infection, where a three-day course is usually prescribed. This involves taking a high dose of the drug.

Malarone junior is recommended for children whose body weight is under 40 kilos.

    How does Malarone work?

Malarone kills malaria parasites present in the body. Its two active ingredients each have their own function: Liver parasites are killed by proguanil, while parasites in the blood are killed by atovaquone.

    How is this medication used?

Malarone tablets should be taken daily with meals, or with a dairy product such as milk. The medication is more easily absorbed if it is taken with fatty foods.

For optimal protection, it is sensible to always take the medication at a fixed time, for example during your evening meal.

Where Malarone is used to prevent infection, you must start tablets on the day before visiting a malaria zone. To cure malaria, you usually have to take a high dose of Malarone once a day for three days.

    Is a prescription required?

You cannot obtain Malarone prescription-free. It must always be prescribed by a doctor.
