Spiriva is a remedy which can relax the airways when used for an extended period of time, thanks to its active ingredient tiotropium. This prevents contraction of the airways and facilitates breathing for those affected by constricted respiratory passages. Among others, it is prescribed for asthma and COPD patients.

What is Spiriva and what is it for?

Spiriva is a medication used to treat respiratory problems in those with constricted airways. Its active ingredient is tiotropium, and spiriva is taken by using an inhaler.

This medication is prescribed for people with prolonged or chronic constriction of the airways, especially those with asthma or COPD. Spiriva acts to prevent complaints such as chest tightness, shortness of breath and coughing.

The medication must usually be taken daily, and spiriva respimat 2.5 is the most common form. After inhalation, it can dilate the airways for a day and help prevent spells of chest tightness.

    How does Spiriva work?

Spiriva respimat opens the airways when they are cramped or constricted, as happens in those with asthma or COPD. In asthmatic patients, the airways frequently cramp due to hypersensitivity to various stimuli. And in COPD patients, mucus can form in damaged airways. Thus, both groups of patients suffer distress.

Spiriva relieves cramps and narrowing of the airways, making breathing easier for around 24 hours after inhalation. It usually takes 30 minutes before the first effects are noticeable, and for those with COPD, it may take several days after first use before any improvement occurs.

    How is Spiriva used?

A Spiriva respimat inhaler is a good way to enable the active ingredient triotropium to be absorbed directly into the airways. However, it takes practice to use an inhaler correctly.

Doctors and pharmacists can explain all about correct spiriva respimat application.

    Is a doctor’s prescription required?

Spiriva is only available on prescription from a doctor.
