    What is terbinafine?

Terbinafine is prescribed for fungal infections such as ringworm, athlete's foot and fungal nails. This medication is also used to treat pityriasis versicolor, a yeast infection of the skin.

A cream is usually sufficient to cure fungal and yeast infections, but terbinafine cream should be used for a number of weeks or months.

Doctors may recommend terbinafine tablets for severe or stubborn infections.

    How does terbinafine work?

Terbinafine is a fungicide prescribed to treat fungal infections of the skin and nails.

It can also be used against yeast infections such as Candida. This drug inhibits yeast and fungal growth.

    Use of terbinafine

A doctor determines your terbinafine dosage and frequency of use. Always finish a course, even though your symptoms disappear, because any remaining traces of yeast or fungi may start to grow if they are not suppressed by terbinafine.

Apply cream on and around the affected areas. With fungal infections of the feet and toenails, always treat both feet.

Take terbinafine 250 mg tablets every day at a fixed time to avoid missing a dose.

    Is a prescription required?

Only doctors can prescribe terbinafine, usually as an unbranded medication. It is also available from Novartis and GlaxoSmithKline BV under the Lamisil brand.

Purchasing cheaper online variants of terbinafine is not recommended because these creams and tablets are not regulated. So it is unclear whether such medications contain active ingredients, and there is a risk they may contain harmful substances.
