What is Emla cream used for?

Emla cream is used to treat sexual problems – specifically premature ejaculation. This occurs when a man ejaculates faster than he and/or his partner find desirable.

Emla cream is also prescribed to reduce pain during skin procedures, such as wound care and wart removal.

Emla anaesthetic cream can also be used to numb the site of an injection or skin puncture.

    How Emla cream works

Emla cream numbs the skin and mucous membranes. The active ingredients are prilocaine and lidocaine. Both substances are painkillers which temporarily numb the skin and mucous membranes, reducing the chances of premature ejaculation.

Emla cream is made by AstraZeneca BV, but is also available in generic (unbranded) form.

    Advice for Emla cream application

To prevent premature ejaculation, Emla cream should be applied to the penis for 5 to 10 minutes and removed before sexual contact. The numbing effect of lidocaine and prilocaine, the active ingredients in Emla cream, lasts for around two hours.

Always remember that condoms can be weakened and may tear more easily.

When used for surgery, the cream should be applied 1 to 5 hours in advance for skin procedures, 30 minutes to an hour for the care of open wounds, and 5 minutes to an hour for mucous membrane procedures. Cover the skin with cling film.

Can you purchase Emla cream prescription-free?

Emla cream is only available on prescription.

Buying alternative brands of this cream offered at low prices by unauthorised suppliers is not recommended. The quality of such creams cannot be guaranteed. Moreover, they may contain harmful substances and thus pose a danger.
