Fluconazole

Fluconazole is a medication to combat yeast and fungal infections. Such infections occur throughout the body: in the mucous membranes (mouth, oesophagus, vagina), the skin and nails, and the organs. Fluconazole tablets can also fight parasitic infections such as leishmaniasis and cryptococcal meningitis.

What is fluconazole and what is it for?

Doctors prescribe fluconazole for yeast and fungal infections in particular. Common infections it can treat include Candida infections of the skin and mucous membranes, such as fungal nails, sprue and vaginal candidiasis.

Some rarer infections can also be treated with fluconazole including leishmaniasis (a parasitic infection) and cryptococcosis (a severe cryptococcus fungal infection).

This antifungal medication, originally developed by Pfizer, is now available in an unbranded form produced by various pharmaceutical companies. Tablets are available in various strengths, including fluconazole 50 mg and fluconazole 150 mg.

    How does fluconazole work?

Fluconazole can be used to treat yeast and fungal infections, but can also be taken as a precaution to prevent infections. Such infections are usually caused by an imbalance between the fungi, yeasts and bacteria normally found on the skin and mucous membranes.

Fluconazole kills excess fungi and yeasts, restores a normal balance and relieves the symptoms.

    How do you use fluconazole?

The strength and duration of the course will depend on the type of infection. A single fluconazole dose may cure a vaginal yeast infection, though doctors may recommend a course of a few months to a year for fungal nails.

Always finish off any treatment, even if your symptoms have already disappeared. Traces of fungi or yeasts can remain, and without fluconazole may start to grow again and cause problems.

Can you buy fluconazole without a prescription?

    Only doctors may prescribe fluconazole.

There are websites where you can buy cheap fluconazole prescription-free. However, such websites usually sell counterfeit products which contain no active ingredients and may even be harmful.
